One aspect of our work has been to find the "inspiration.” It could be just watching the ball better, playing more unpredictably, etc.... I am finding my own inspiration by looking to stay engaged in my own wonder of how the moment can surprise me. For me to be less jaded. Part of my experience as an ATP Tour player was always looking to anticipate a shot or situation. Yes, it is part of the flow of a match; but to rely on that and place judgment on each shot was where I got used by myself. I remembered the line from “Lawrence of Arabia” when Peter O’Toole was asked what he was brought to the desert to do. Lawrence was clearly unsure, but responded, “To appreciate the situation.” Today I could feel the opposite: that urge to anticipate for Sam, as a coach. Then get frustrated by an outcome, NO INSPIRATION! No appreciation. Then it dawned on me: to be inspired, I might have to deal with humility and learn things that are not always about the obvious results.Sam's second-round had him paired up against the #2 seed. No, it wasn't an even older and grumpier old man. His new opponent was a savvy tournament player who looked like he had played on clay much of his life. Sam went down 6-1, 6-3. The score doesn't do Sam justice: every game was close. I saw a focus and shit…
I wrote back to Kelly, but he was practicing with Sam and couldn’t get us off the cliffhanger. Maybe tomorrow when they have a day off? Monday, Kelly will be reporting from the Qualifying Tournament for the Miami BNP Paribas Open – the next big stop on the ATP tour.
